The Yamas Greek restaurant opened in Alkenrath at the beginning of August and we had been meaning to visit since then. Finally we made it. We booked earlier one Sunday afternoon for a table for 5 adults and a two year old little girl.
Our table was in a corner in the back room. The decoration isn't particularly special with only a couple of old black and white photos of couples in an apparent Greek setting. But we weren't here for the decorations - we wanted true, authentic Greek food and that's what we got.
Firstly we got a round of drinks in. The ladies were happy that a sweet Greek red wine in carafes was on offer - 7,00 Euro for half a litre which is great. The lads went for Kölsch Früh beer and shandies to help quench the early thirst.
The menu is packed full of Greek delicacies. For starters I went for Ochtapodi Scaras - octopus - something I haven't had outside of Greece before. Simple but delicious. My fellow diners tucked into various goodies - Kolokithakia (battered zucchini), Dolmadakia (stuffed vine leaves) and loads and loads of tzatziki with delicious toasted bread. In fact the bread itself was a major hit - we had baskets full arriving at the table all evening.
For the main course I couldn't decide between the Sikoti (beef liver with onions and mushrooms), the lambs knuckle with broad beans or Kalamarakia. In the end I stayed with seafood - some excellent lightly deep fried - baby squids. They were exquisite. The rest of our party had various delicacies ranging from Gyros Tiganaki, Choriatiki (typical Greek salad with Feta cheese) and an apparent child's portion of gyros and chips (which was huge).
Halfway through the meal I switched from Kölsch to the excellent, drinkable house red wine. Thoroughly recommended.
Not all of us could finish our meals so we asked for several doggie bags. This was no problem. As the restaurant thinned out we went for one dessert and 6 spoons. The chocolate souffle was a fitting end to an excellent evening.
During the meal I noticed a number of references to the town of Drama in northern Greece. In chatting with the friendly owners and staff we discovered that they come from this part of the country. They were very friendly and patient as we struggled with the remnants of their Greek language that we picked up when we lived there 15 years ago.
So, all in all Yamas is a wonderful place to visit if you enjoy authentic Greek food. My only recommendation to the owners would be please include other forms of payment than just cash in the near future. Not accepting any form of payments with cards is really not on in this day and age.
