A silly FB "like" just doesn't say a thing. I probably shouldn't even be writing this, as gentrification is hitting fast and hard, even damaging those spots where Berlin is still the city that appealed to me as the funkiest place on earth in the mid 80s. The Uferhallen area and this superb hole-in-the-wall Italian eatery are reasons to not yet dispair. "They know what they're doing", was what my companion said last night, who couldn't quite hide his surprise on the appearance of the place.... Well, huh, you can't eat white table cloth, can you?... Anyways. I had green and white asparagus on a foam of potatoe with an egg yolk in it. To be sure: a pretty damn perfect egg yolk, smiling at me like the perfectly full moon outside (no, I'm not a lunatic). Joy of joys, this simple starter was tastily adorned with rosemary. Wow. Next came "badly cut" black pasta (maltagliati) with cubes of salmon, cocktail pomodorini, and, like in Britain - mint. That did it to me!!! An Italo-English marriage of taste, who would have thought? (At least I never met mint in Italy, so welcome!!) The housewine was a perfectly unprententious companion, nothing screaming me-me-me, just a plain good Italian table wine. A Verdicchio for me, and my friend chose the red house wine along with his - equally extraordinary - veal terrrine. What else could you ask for?
